Macatawa Strata: Decommissioned Power Plant is an investigation into the past, present and potential futures of the decommissioned power plant in Holland. Our team hosted two public events on the site with help from Holland’s Board of Public Works who owns the site. Participants were invited to make a ceramic plate, gather data, map, and photograph. The plates were created by pressing clay on infrastructure within the site and then pressing the clay over a mold to form a plate. Our team also hosted a table at the Outdoor Discovery Center’s Water Festival. Attendees helped us print napkins and make coasters. The coasters were made by pressing in 3D prints of invertebrate fossils that would be in the shale layer under the site and pressing in marsh plants that would have been at the site when it was a marsh. The plates, napkins, coasters, and photographs were used to host a dinner for the Holland Planning Commission where guests were asked to contemplate the past, present, and future of the site. The dinner served as a celebration and critique of past and future land-use.
